FAQ - 💬

❓ Where is the best place to plant a pyracantha?

👉 Pyracantha is suitable for any moderately fertile garden soil in sun or partial shade, including very dry, free-draining soils, and heavy clays, as long as they are not prone to waterlogging. Berrying can be reduced in shady sites, including against north-facing walls.

❓ What is the growth rate of pyracantha?

👉 Pyracantha coccinea 'Red Column' is a fast-growing hedge plant, with an expected growth of 50cm a year. These hedges look best when maintained to a height of between 1 - 3 metres.

❓ Why is Pyracantha called Firethorn?

👉 The name "pyracantha" is from Greek "pyr" meaning fire and "acanthos" meaning thorn, hence its common name.

❓ What is the best time to plant pyracantha?

👉 Plant pyracantha in autumn, during mild spells in winter, or early spring. For growing against walls or fences, plant the rootball 30-40cm away and lean the plant onto its support, to avoid the rain shadow at the base. For hedging, space plants 50cm apart in a single row.

❓ Do pyracantha have deep roots?

👉 Pyracantha are long-lived shrubs and the only care required after they are established is to prune them (see section below). They are naturally deep rooted an will search out moisture well below the soil surface.

❓ Does pyracantha lose leaves in winter?

👉 This is most likely to occur during late winter to early spring. Whilst it may look unsightly, most of the affected leaves will drop off and be replaced in spring, and the process has little effect on the overall health of the plant. Lack of berries is also often reported by pyracantha growers.

❓ Is firethorn poisonous to dogs?

👉 The Bottom Line The berries have not been shown to be toxic to animals or humans, although swallowing large amounts might cause some mild stomach upset.

❓ Do birds eat pyracantha berries?

👉 8. Pyracantha. The pyracantha or firethorn has lots to offer the birds. Evergreen, it provides plenty of cover for smaller birds and the red or yellow berries that cover the bush through winter are loved by sparrows, starlings and finches.

❓ Does pyracantha need a trellis?

👉 There should be a framework of wire or trellis in place prior to planting. Having donned some protective gloves, plant Pyracantha about 50cm from the wall or fence and train it like an espalier apple until the framework has been filled.

❓ Can pyracantha be cut back hard?

👉 Yes, but you usually only need to lightly prune it. Even though pyracantha is super hardy and will most likely survive and come back from a hard pruning, it isn't necessary to cut it back too much. Ideally, you want to lightly prune and shape your pyracantha in the spring to encourage healthy new growth.

❓ Can humans eat pyracantha berries?

👉 The Bottom Line. Pyracantha is an evergreen shrub often used in landscaping. The shrub typically has plentiful orange-red berries and needle-like thorns. The berries have not been shown to be toxic to animals or humans, although swallowing large amounts might cause some mild stomach upset.

👉 For the novel, see Firethorn (novel). Pyracantha (from Greek pyr "fire" and akanthos "thorn", hence firethorn) is a genus of large, thorny evergreen shrubs in the family Rosaceae, with common names firethorn or pyracantha. They are native to an area extending from Southwest Europe east to Southeast Asia.

👉 Pyracantha hedging, also know as Firethorn - the Greek for pyr being fire and akanthos meaning thorn, is of great interest to our local wildlife. Pyracanthas provide dense cover due to their evergreen foliage and thorny branches which makes a desirable habitat for birds and hedgehogs alike.

👉 Bright red berries are the main feature of pyracantha. This broadleaf, evergreen shrub grows to 10 to 15 feet and spreads 10 feet. All species have glossy green leaves, which are ½ to 1 inch wide and 1 to 4 inches long. All bear flowers and fruit on spurs along the wood of last year’s growth. Flowers appear in spring.

👉 The following cultivars have won the Royal Horticultural Society 's Award of Garden Merit : 1 Pyracantha 'Orange Glow' (orange berries) 2 Pyracantha Saphyr Orange = 'Cadange' (orange berries) 3 Pyracantha Saphyr Rouge = 'Cadrou' (orange-red berries) 4 Pyracantha 'Teton' (orange-yellow berries) 5 Pyracantha rogersiana 'Flava' (yellow berries)
